NOTICE TO CONSUMERS ON THE TOWN OF BERRYVILLE WATER SYSTEM
Additional Information Regarding U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Drinking Water Standards and Home Water Filtration Products
The Town was contacted by several customers who wanted more information about drinking water standards. The Town has also received several inquiries asking whether certain home filtration devices remove disinfection by-products.
The Town contacted the Virginia Department of Health and requested assistance with responding to these requests.
The Virginia Department of Health provided the Town with the attached U.S. Environmental Protection Agency document titled 2018 Edition of Drinking Water Standards and Health Advisories Tables (PDF) to provide our customers with more information on drinking water standards.
The Virginia Department of Health does not evaluate household filters to determine if or how well they remove disinfection by-products. Instead, they defer to NSF product evaluations. The Virginia Department of Health informed the Town that filter treatment effectiveness for specific contaminants may be verified by the NSF 53 testing and certification process. Customers may search for filtration products that conform to that standard.
We hope that this information is helpful.
