Additional Information Regarding
Drinking Water Standards and Home Water Filtration Products
The Town has received several requests for more information regarding whether certain home filtration devices remove disinfection by-products.
The Virginia Department of Health does not evaluate household filters to determine if or how well they remove disinfection by-products. Instead, they defer to NSF product evaluations. The Virginia Department of Health informed the Town that filter treatment effectiveness for specific contaminants may be verified by the NSF 53 testing and certification process. Customers may search for filtration products that conform to that standard.
