In compliance with Environmental Protection Agency directive and with the assistance of the Virginia Department of Health, the Town of Berryville has recently developed a Lead Service Line Inventory, an inventory of the materials that make up all the water lines served by the Town. The inventory is available for viewing at the Town’s Business Office at 101 Chalmers Court, Berryville. Addresses whose lines are lead, galvanized, or unknown have been notified. A plan to resolve all unknown statuses and replace all lead and galvanized requiring replacement is in development and due by 2027.
Berryville thanks 22 citizens who collected water samples during the month of September for lead and copper analysis. The results indicate 90th percentile lead and copper concentrations of 0.006 mg/L for Lead and 0.063 mg/L for Copper, well below the established Action Levels of 0.015 mg/L and 1.3 mg/L, respectively. These excellent results make Berryville eligible for reduced (triennial) testing.
In summary, Berryville’s drinking water does not have elevated levels of lead. However, full remediation of lead plumbing necessitates communication with property owners to determine the material that comprises the water lines inside their homes. If you are unsure of what your water pipes are, please call 540-955-1099 and ask for Deputy Town Manager Jean Petti or email deputytownmanager@berryvilleva.gov. Appointments are available for on-site evaluations if you are unable to determine the material of your water line yourself. Berryville intends to pursue financial assistance for property owners who may have lead or galvanized requiring replacement lines and be unable to afford to cost of replacement, but our first step is determining how many properties fall into this category.
