Sidewalks to be cleared of snow and ice by 11:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025
Precipitation from the recent winter storm ceased to fall prior to 9:00 p.m. on January 6, 2025. Approximately 7” of snow fell during the storm.
Berryville Code Section 15-16 {https://library.municode.com/va/berryville/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=CH15STSI_ARTIINGE_S15-16DUPROWOCRESNICSI}, requires the owner of buildings and/or lots abutting a sidewalk to remove snow and ice from said sidewalk within 24 hours after precipitation ceased to fall.
Accordingly, sidewalks in Town must be cleared by 11:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025. Berryville Police will begin enforcement of Berryville Code Section 15-16 at that time. Notice of violation will be posted on properties on which sidewalk conditions are deemed to be in violation of Section 15-16.
Property owners have 8 hours after the Police Department notice is posted to clear the sidewalk in question. If the property owner fails to clear the sidewalk within the allotted timeframe, then enforcement action will commence. Such action may include clearing of the sidewalk by Town personnel or contractor and issuance of a summons for violation of Berryville Code Section 15-16. If the Town causes a sidewalk to be cleared in accordance with Section 15-16, then the cost of the work, including an administrative fee, will be charged to the owner.
Thank you for your hard work clearing sidewalks thereby providing for safe pedestrian passage throughout the community.
